The Pepin Mansion was built in 1851 by Victor Pepin (Jr.) who came to New Albany from Louisville (across the river) when he was a young man and made his fortune as a lawyer and banker. One historic article lists Victor as the “Head Clerk” at the State Bank of Indiana, New Albany which had the reputation as one of the wealthiest and most successful banks of the day in the United Sates. I think Victor probably rated a little higher than the “Head Clerk” to have built the biggest and BEST Mansion in Indiana in 1851.
Now listed on the National Registry of Historical Homes architecturally the Pepin Mansion is a “Pattern Book” Italianate Tuscan Villa designed by noted Philadelphia Architect Samuel Sloan. The local builder/architect could chose the basic design from a Pattern Book and then choose options or add any local products to the final design.
The Pepin Mansion has been home to only several families over the years: Victor Pepin (1851 – 1857), The Crommie Family, The Barth Family (~60 years, owners of the local Barth Tannery), The Turley Family (~1954 – ~1995). The Mansion is now owned by Ron and Christine Smith who have restored The Pepin Mansion and now operate the Mansion as a Bed & Breakfast and Special Event Venue.
Much of the Mansion remains original: 15-foot tall Horse-Hair Plaster walls and ceilings have been maintained, plaster moldings and ornate medallions, marble & cast-iron fire-places, Hardwood Floors (In-laid Quarter Saw’n Oak and Red Pine), many original gas fixtures, original painted ceilings in the Ballroom and Formal Parlor, and more.
The original Carriage House sides a huge open Event Lawn rarely found in a historic City Center enabling large outdoor events… Weddings and Receptions of 300+ are possible, ideal for tenting!
The spacious rooms, common areas and gourmet kitchen make the Pepin Mansion the perfect Bed & Breakfast venue for overnight, weekend or extended stays. Four guest rooms with private baths are offered. The Mansion features central heat and air conditioning for the comfort of our guests.
The Bed & Breakfast is an elegant setting for special events such as weddings, anniversaries, luncheons, and celebrations. Your out-of-town guests will find the rooms convenient and accommodating during their visit.
